Professional info

Currently my artwork is constantly viewable at Rabble Coffee on 10th street and online year round.  My works also circulate as I participate in a variety of gallery exhibitions, including the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 years of FLAVA FRESH.  Other locations I have shown at include The Artsgarden, Garfield Park Art Center, Nickel Plate, Indiana Landmarks, Indiana Interchurch Center, Indianapolis Public Library,Tubespace Art Factory and had a solo show at CCIC. I have collaborated on several projects with Ezi Underwood including the mural under the railway for his American 3.14 project as well as the commissions for One-Up Bar including a mural and a framed piece.  I am currently working on a small mural at Greeks Pizzeria on 16th street.  Recently I participated in the Monster Drawing Rally hosted by Newfields.

My long term goal is to create an artist coalition/coop and makerspace that acts as a third place to connect artists to the community and reintegrate arts into daily society.  My ideal would be to have a place where artists held classes, potentially free ones or at a low cost, but that had several extra rooms or areas where the public could utilize for meetings, discussions, clubs, team sports, anything really.  The more you could bring in the public the closer art could be involved to the daily lives of those who don't consider themselves creatives.  Part of the mentality of the coop would be to challenge that notion in new comers.  In my Social Practice Art master's program at University of Indianapolis I realized that for the public to desire art to be in their lives it needs to be made relevant to them.  Children tend to naturally express their creativity in whatever form that manifests itself.  As humans change from child to adult they forget about their inner creative.  I want the place to hold at least once a week activities that encourage visitors to find their inner artist and to inspire the public to create community through engaging in challenging activities and discussions they may otherwise never consider.  My goal would be that this co-op finds way to better the surrounding community through more than just art-making, such as staging group clean-ups, tree-plantings. having a free community garden with classes on crop raising and care with a monthly public pot-luck made from things grown in the garden, the possibilities are endless!

For the first few years during and slightly after my undergraduate degree I pursued art exposure through gallery exhibitions.  After several shows and little increase in financial success I began to question if the process of gallery shows was no longer the main way to connect to the public.  I had wanted to take my art to the streets through either installation or mural work but without enough connections I was always outdone by someone with more experience.   In my questioning I came across the burgeoning field of social practice art.  Social practice art takes art from the gallery and puts it back into the hands of the public.  It attempts to blend art with social action to create works that form an impact on their surroundings and communities.  The forms this takes sometimes does not look like art.  For one of my final projects I held a workshop on upcycling and demonstrated how a broken chair could become a succulent garden with some innovation and garden tools.  This was a project that anyone could engage in, there was no art degree required.

Education
Master's Program in Social Practice Art at University of Indianapolis.

2018 - present

Creative placemaking comes in may forms such as an artist intervention. An artist intervention can range from DIY pop-up cafe stands, annual Park-ing day where parking spots are turned into temporary gardens, libraries, meditation spaces, etc, to communal gardens or bike repair shops, to workshops about storytelling or creative expression in a more traditional manner. This program has allowed me access to mentors currently in the field such as Jim Walker of BigCar, Kevin McKelvey, LaShonda Crowe Storm, and Juan Chavez.  They have guided me as I've created some interventions within the program, such as my work with repurposing refuse and upcycling at Rabble Coffee (Near Eastside w/Josie Hunckler of Rabble Coffee -2119 E 10th St), and my current project using beehives for education about urban agriculture, sustainability, environmentally-healthy practices and pollinator value at William McKinley as part of their Learning Nature Center and at Jason Micheal Thomas's urban farm Indy Urban Awareness Gardens (-1637 Central Ave).  This has taught me about third spaces,  the concept of a communal public gathering place, or third space, where people can go to feel welcomed, recognized, comfortable, included and cared for. Within the program I have learned how to work with a community to develop projects specifically around the issues they face locally.
